Why should you and I care about children?
The number of orphans in the country is growing and A UNAIDS estimate sets the total at two and half million of whom have lost their mother, father or both parents to AIDS (Unicef, 2018). In a community such as Orange Farm where HIV and AIDS is just one among the many challenges they are facing, statistics can be very frightening.
Many orphans in this community are taken care of by extended families, many of whom are themselves struggling to make a living, especially those headed by elderly people and women who already live at the edge of poverty. Many of these children do not have birth certificates and so do not qualify for social grants, the primary source of income for the many households in this community.
These orphans and vulnerable children are our future and unless you and I do something to change their fortunes, we will continue to perpetrate the legacy Apartheid.
